A 24-hour collaborative cross-disciplinary tech sprint, where I worked with a team to create a digital solution for a problem set by 7SHIFTS. The challenge required us to use our problem-solving, design, and technical skills to come up with an innovative solution within a tight timeframe

How Might We

How might we help restaurant managers schedule shifts more efficiently?
After receiving the HMW question from 7SHIFTS, we initiated our exploration of the problem space

Problem Space

In the realm of restaurant management, the task of scheduling shifts for staff members poses significant challenges.Restaurant managers are faced with the intricate puzzle of efficiently allocating shifts to a diverse team, considering factors such as employee availability, skill sets, labor laws, and business demands.

Secondary Research

Our group's initial approach to addressing this challenge involved research efforts. Our data scientist focused on sourcing and analyzing data sets, while our designers and engineers collaborated on secondary research. All discoveries were then shared within the team for collective discussion

In our quest to narrow down the scope of our challenge, we streamlined our focus onto a fresh set of HMW question

How Might We

How might we empower restaurant managers to incentivize performance and reduce recurring issues?

Proto Persona

To gain deeper insights into the problem, we crafted a proto persona named Sarah Mitchell. Sarah Mitchell, our proto persona, is driven by the need for clear and timely communication within her team, striving to ensure smooth shift changes and enhance employee engagement. She aims to create a positive work environment that balances the restaurant's needs with staff preferences and availability, although she faces challenges in securing last-minute replacements and handling unforeseen disruptions

Our Solution

7STARS is an employee rewards and recognition program that serves as a framework for acknowledging and celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of employees within a company
 
Gamification is the application of game-design elements and game principles in non-game contexts

We also created Badges & Points System as our solution to incentivize the employees.

High-Fidelity Prototype

We've made changed to streamline the process of adding points and badges as incentives for employees. Importantly, we maintained the existing layout of 7SHIFTS and utilized their current page for this purpose

Impact

While 7STARS has not yet been implemented, our initial findings remain theoretical. However, we have observed in our research that in cases where gamification has been employed, the results have been astonishing

Research indicates that 88% of employees express positive impact in their workplace when the software they use incorporates gamification elements
92% Agree when they’re recognised for a specific action,
they’re more likely
to take that action again in the future
By implementing gamification to
enhance employee retention, a company found that their initial turnover rate decreased from 25% to 8%

Next steps

  • Track, Analyze, and Report on the impact of the 7Stars system
     
  • Conduct thorough user tests and A/B tests
     
  • Improve feature design based on feedback on the prototype's usability, effectiveness of gamification elements, and overall user experience
     
  • Monitor metrics pertaining to restaurant success and suggest new rewards/incentives to improve key metrics
